Tarot - the Fool's Circle of Life
by Danielle Astrid Ricard
For ease in writing, I will use the gender pronoun that best matches the illustration below - no sexism intended. To listen to Musical accompaniment, look for a small link in the text!
This Archetype is number 9 of 22 Trump or Major Arcana cards in the Tarot. While the remaining pip and court cards portray more mundane realities, these cards represent higher energies, karmic forces, powers beyond our control, and superhuman strengths. In the Thoth Tarot deck, the Hermit is ruled by Virgo
~ Following the Light ~
Once again - I'm using an illustration from the Cosmic Tarot!
The Hermit travels alone through life. He is either oblivious to, or doesn't concern himself with how others perceive him. This one is a light unto his own.
The Hermit follows a distinct inner vision. He has a sure and well defined path to follow. This soul knows exactly where he is headed and possibly even what he will find there - and he doesn't necessarily need any companions, or even approval - except perhaps from whomever or whatever he holds highest in his heart.
In my favorite Tarot book, (which I can't find -!!), the author defines the hermit as one who follows the "straight and narrow path" This is my preferred way of reading this card. Chances are - unless the Hermit falls between two very ominous cards - the path the Hermit chooses is the highest and most clear-visioned path one is capable of. In other words... although perhaps unyielding to outside influence, the Hermit doesn't hurt people, lie or make a mess of things. He proceeds through life's challenges with great focus, and the purest of intentions.
Sometimes the Hermit represents you, and sometimes another person serving as a Guide for you. Unlike the Heirophant or Priestess, though - this is a guide who is willing to stand well outside of the usual boundaries - apart from tradition or conformity, and quietly lead the way.
In a much simpler context, perhaps the Hermit portrays a situation in which you are completely on your own. There is no partner, nobody to consult with. This is your life - and you must do what you must do! A lonely guy or gal? Perhaps - but we all need solitude sometimes, and sometimes even for a long time. And in the grand scheme of things, except for that guiding light of Love we all hold so dear - we are each indeed - all alone.
In yet another scenario (again assuming that surrounding cards support this) - the Hermit can indicate that things are going along as planned. The scenario you are concerned with remains aligned with your wishes and your ultimate goals.
On a very personal level, this card asks you - what exactly is your path? What light are you following? Is it your own, or something pre-designed by society? In all likelihood, it is a combination of both - but whatever it may be - it is certainly your own, and you alone are responsible for your choices....
MEDITATION: Contemplate the Hermit within you. Visualize your guiding light in life. What is (currently) your main goal or personal agenda... to help others? to raise a family? to excel creatively? Has this path changed over the years?
PERSONAL DISCUSSIONS: When have you felt the energy of the Hermit? Have you seen it in other people? Have you had happy/sad experiences with this energy?
TAROT EXPERIENCE: Recalling a time when you may have you drawn this card, what were the circumstances surrounding it, and what did it mean to you? How do you feel this archetype affects the cards that come before or after?
Guiding Considerations: any more ideas??
